William Carruthers and Mary Lieper came from North Ireland to North America. Their arrival date and location are unknown. The first tax record is 1759 to the original home farm of 180 acres. This land is still the main hub of the operations today.
William and Mary had a son John Carruthers in 1759. He later married Elizabeth Beard. John and Elizabeth had 4 sons one of whom was James Crothers in 1799.
Elizabeth Beard’s father was an attorney and wrote the will of John and Elizabeth. In their will he changed the spelling of the family name to Crothers.
James married Rachel Cameron. Together they had a son James Cameron Crothers. In 1829 the stone house that is still standing today was built.
James Cameron Crothers married Hannah Thompson. Together they had Alfred Thompson Crothers in 1871.
Alfred Thompson Crothers married Kathryn Sapp. They had a son named Alfred Crothers Junior.
Alfred Junior married Mary Alice Brown. They had three children: Kathryn Eva, Alfred Thompson III and Donald Clemson (1950).
Donald Crothers married Linda Sue McClure in 1972. Donald and Linda have three sons: Donald, Anthony, and Caleb. Donald and Linda purchased an additional 300 acres to add to the home farm.
Caleb married his wife, Mary Alice Weddington in 2007. They returned to the farm in 2015. Together with their three daughters, they operate Long Green Farms Inc. Caleb and Alice added an additional 70 acres to the farm in 2017 and placed the farm in land preservation in 2018.
